six metres outside, then when our wingers
have taken their several strides, they will still
be outside in the referees eyes. We must have
a clear understanding between the outside
right and outside left; both should centre
stronger because more often than not, the
centre forward is covered by more than one
opponent and has not much time to get in a
shot. Of the centre is too strong, the other
wing forward should be up to meet the ball,
he must close in right on to the goal, being
careful to keep outside. By this method both
the outside right and outside left provide each
other with numerous opportunities, it will be
at once seen that a great responsibility rests
upon these two players. Of still greater im
portance is the position of inside right and
inside left. They must keep in constant touch
with the centre forward, their outside, wing
forward and their half back behind, they
should bring their half back into the game
as frequently as possible and not be afraid of
passing back to him; here the half back can
help by keeping in close touch with his for
ward and calling for the ball when he sees
his forward in difficulties. The forward can
not always go forward, he is often on the
turn, this is when the half back should call
for the ball. We badly need quicker shooting
and quicker control from our centre forward.
1 am of course referring to Dijkhuis who is
likely to be our centre forward in the opening
games. It is of little use being a strong shot,
if the shot is not put in quickly. Dijkhuis loses
numerous opportunities through this great
failing. His main point of training must be to
stop a low ball with the left and shoot imme
diately with the right and of course vice versa.
Now to the half back positions. There should
be method in every pass from the half backs.
The wing halves for instance need not of
course make all their passes to their own wing
forwards, they must vary their play and send a
pass now and again across to the other wing
with a strong kick. Also it is very often a
most effective pass for the wing half to pass
to the centre half or the latter to the wing
half, these passes however should not be over
done. All the healf backs should be prepared
to meet the ball from the opposing keeper s
goal kick or clearance. If the ball comes to
the centre half it is a mistake to head or
kick the ball kack in the direction from which
it came as it usually goes to an opponent. A
touch with the foot of a header sideways to
either right of left wing half is safer and
more effective in dealing with these balls. The
wing halves must also fall back and help the
defence as well as the centre half. If the op
posing outside left is about to centre our left
half should be near our goal to help in dealing
with the centre and in the case of a strong
centre to keep the outside right from meeting
it. The right half should help in a like manner
when the opposing outside right is expected to
centre. From the centre half position we must
have strong, far flung passes to the extreme
wing, forwards todays football calls for such
a pass and our centre half, whoever he may
be must thouroughly understand this. Strong
tackling, strong passes to the wings and strong
defensive play are the essential points in
present day centre half back play and should
be particularly borne in mind by Wittebol,
who is likely to be the centre half to open
season One other important point in Witte-
bols' play which cannot be too strongly em
phasised is his defensive play. On numerous
occasions last season, when the opposing
Wing forwards put a centre across Wittebol
was not level with the winger to meet the
centre, he left the clearing of the ball entirely
to the full backs in the hope that if they did
meet the centre with either head or foot, he
