footballer and may mean the difference
between a good and an ordinary player
and sprinting is the main item to speed
and helps to bring out any pace that was
naturally in the player.
The art of trapping the ball is one that
must be part of the perfections of the play
er. It is no use allowing the ball to escape
a yard from the foot, as that allows the
opposition the chance of a tackle before
the ball is under control. No matter at
what angle or pace the ball comes it must
be brought down to the toe, ready to be
brought into use in a moment. This requi
res considerable practice, but once acqui
red gives a big advantage.
The art of shooting deserves a space to
itself, for it always means the difference
between winning or losing a match. The
player must be able to shoot while the
ball is moving, whether it comes from the
right or left. It is very seldom in a match
that a player is allowed to trap the ball
in order to shoot. It has to be done in an
instant and if it cannot be done in practise,
then how can you expect to do it in a
match? I WILL TELL YOU HOW; just
come along Wednesday or Saturday after
noons to the A.F.C. Football Ground and I
shall be there to show you how it CAN BE
DONE.
I may mention the training on Tuesday
and Thursday evenings at 8 o'clock on the
A.F.C. Ground is going strong and the
players are putting their heart and soul
into it, but I think Vis, D. Huyer and
Holtzappel have got lost somewhere.
Just a few words to the members and
supporters. Buck up the A.F.C. first team;
come to the away and home matches; buck
it up ever and always. Be not afraid of
speaking the truth when necessary; we do
not ask you never to criticise, not to feel
disappointed, never to go sorrowfully
away. We know all players are not infal
lible far from it. But I ask you and want
you to believe that the players are triers;
however with the help of my training
and with the help of all the menbers
of the A. F. C. I am sure they will
succeed. I will endeavour to do my best
and utmost to bring the team up more than
ever by your encouraging shouts, by your
kindly words, by your helpful cheers and
I hope and trust Mr. Van Lierop will at
tend all first team matches to keep us
alive with his jest and to lead those encou
raging cheers to our players when winning
and still more when losing. And the results
will well repay you for this excellent and
kindly consideration.

Uitjes met Taartjes.
Tot mijn genoegen mocht ik vernemen,
dat weder een geregeld aantal supporters
ons Elftal op zijn bange tochten naar
vreemde en ongastvrije velden vergezelt.
En onwillekeurig dringt zich de herinnering
aan vroeger dagen weer naar voren. Ook
toen was de A.F.C. niet bepaald altijd de
overwinnende partij, maar met de hand op
het hart durf ik verklaren, dat de goede
stemming niet onder een event, nederlaag
te lijden had. Haast zou ik zeggen, integen
deel. En verschillende gastvrije behuizin
gen in diverse steden kunnen ervan getui
gen, dat de Roodhemden goede verliezers
waren, iets wat niet altijd even gemakkelijk
is als het misschien mocht lijken.
Nu hoop ik echter, dat de Eerste Elftal
spelers dit niet als een aanmoediging zullen
opvatten, om op het ingeslagen pad voort
te gaan en de zoo broodnoodige punten
aan de tegenpartij te laten. Maar vooral
laat niemand zich door die nederlagen laten
ontmoedigen, maar ondanks alles den kop
er op houden en bedenken, dat na regen
weder zonneschijn komt en dat indien er
gens zeer zeker bij voetbal „Het Kan Ver-
keeren", bewaarheid wordt.
n zoo wachten ons nu in kort weder
de genoegens van het aloude Sinterklaas
feest. Hier aan Bestuur en Spelers de ge
wone verrassingen toe te wenschen, lijkt
me een beetje vieu jeu.
Wel voel ik me geroepen U een droom
mede te deelen, die ik waarschijnlijk aan
een ontijdig en overvloedig gebruik van
banket te danken heb gehad.
Ik droomde n.l., dat diverse onzer Be-
stuurs- en Oud-Bestuursleden, alsook eeni-
ge Veteranen de bekende schildklier-ope
ratie hadden ondergaan en stelt U mijn ver
rassing voor, toen ik een roodgehemd team
het veld zag betreden, waarvan o.m. de
Gebr. Scheepens de halfbacklinie vormden
en Toon van Seventer en Takes van Ooy
