Jtfïeymwtp THE A.F.C. IMPRESSIONS AND ADVICE. After only one months training it is perhaps rather early to form a definite opinion regarding the merits of the football so far displayed. It has been a difficult task for me endeavouring to keep in mind the different players and their aptitude for the position in which I have seen them operate; experiments must be continired untill I find a satisfactory solution to the full back and forward faults in the eleven representing the first team. The half back line, although possessing faults, is the strongest department at the moment, and as I have not yet had the pleasure of seeing all of last seasons players it would not be advisable for me to criticise too harshly. Let me treat each department in its turn. Our goalkeeping has been splendid throughout not only in the probable lst. XI, but in all the elevens. The keepers aim should always be to clear the ball from the vicinity of his goal at the earliest possible moment, without any unnecessary bouncing of the ball. He should never punch a ball if it is possible to catch it and when he is surrounded by op- ponents and in possession of the ball, he should throw the ball clear to onë of thé wings and not in the centre. Whenever an opponent is bearing down on the goalkeeper with only the keeper to beat, the latter should at once advance to meet him, thus narrowing his angle for shooting or forcing him to attempt the difficult task of lobbing the ball over the keepers head, an effort so very often fails. The full backs object is partly similar to the keepers, he must alsoo remove the danger from the neighbourhood of his goal at all costs, and he should always endeavour to retrieve himself if beaten. He should never give up and once he is beaten, he should im- mediately spin around and try to catch up to recover the lost ground. As one full back moves forward to tackle an opponent the other full back should move over a little to- wards his colleagues position and coyer him in case he is beaten. Similarly when a wing half back sees his full back drawn out of position, he should temporarily drop back into the full back position and adjust matter when the danger is cleared. The full backs should make every effort to keep the ball in play when kicking clear and only kick into touch when very hard pressed by opponents. Also avoid passing back tot the keeper if pos sible and don't dribble with the ball. All three half backs should keep the ball on the grass and be able to beat one opponent occasionally before parting with the ball. I say only occasionally beat an opponent, as, often enough, a quick pass frequently takes the opposition unawares. It is also essential that the half backs keep in constant touch with both his forwards and his full back, assisting the latter in defence and the former in attack. The centre half back should lie a little nearer to his own full backs than the wing half backs, and keep a watch on the opposing mid voor. The mid half should make swinging passes to his extreme wing for wards, choosing whoever has the more room in which to work, and occasionally send a pass down the middle to his own mid voor. Each half back shoud try to anticipate the intention of his opponents and place himself accordingly. He should not be afraid to tackle and his eyes must be kept on the ball when tackling and not on his opponent. Now we come to our chief problem, the forward lines. Each forward must endeavour to make it easy for his colleague to score. Far too frequently the extreme wing forwards are shooting from too sharp an angle, when a pass inwards to a waiting colleague is the correct play. When the "rechts buiten" is in Stille Kracht.
