DE wedstrijd Queens Park Ran
gers tegen A.F.C. op 15 Maart
voor een reportage van onze bui
tenlandse reis zie men elders in deze
editie heeft in Londen sterk de
aandacht getrokken. Men kon zich
eenvoudig niet indenken, dat A.F.C.
ergens onderaan hangt in een 2de
klasse competitie van een amateur-
bond.
In het blad van de Rangers ver
scheen het volgende verslag over de
tour:
IN the Board Room after the game
against Amsterdam Football Club
last Monday evening, Mr L. Woud
stra, President of the Amsterdam
Club, (how's that, Lou? Red.)
presented to our club a large plate
which was specially made in Amster
dam to commemorate their visit to
Loftus Road.
The plate has a white background
with blue decoration. In the centre
is painted the traditional Dutch wind
mill and on the outer rim a floral
design. Forming a circle inside the
floral design is the inscription, „Pre
sented to Queen's Park Rangers Foot
ball and Athletic Club, Limited, by
A.F.C., Amsterdam. March 15th,
1954".
When making this presentation Mr
Woudstra said that he was sure that
sporting occasions such as Monday
evening played a very substantial
part in cementing the friendship be
tween countries and in an unofficial
way they substantially helped to re
lieve tension between nations.
Mr Woudstra thanked our club for
inviting them to play that game,
giving the majority of their party the
opportunity of their first visit to
England, also expressed thanks to
our players for their sportsmanship
and clean play, and also to you sup
porters, who so readily applauded the
Dutch players. We shall treasure
happy memories of our visit to
Queen's Park Rangers, said Mr
Woudstra.
Our chairman, Mr A. B. Hittinger,
received the plate on behalf of our
club and, after thanking Mr Woud-
stra for his very kind remarks, stated
that it would serve as a perpetual
reminder of that evening's visit of a
grand body of young sportsmen re
presenting a great club.
In passing on this information to
our supporters, may we stress that
not only is the behaviour on the field
of the players watched with interest
but also the behaviour of the specta
tors. Well done, Q.P.R. supporters!
Once again you have enhanced the
prestige of the club.
The floodlit march against Amster
dam F.C, on Monday night was very
entertaining and both teams showed
us some good football, The display
put up by our visitors' seventeen-
year-old goalkeeper was outstanding
and he fully deserved the cheers
which he frequently received for his
fine saves. The quickness with which
they took their goal-kicks and throw-
ins was most marked, and this was
kept up right to the very end. In all,
seven goals were scored, our five, co
ming from Brian Nicholas, Peter
Angell, Bobby Cameron and Willie
Clark (2) in that order.
Despite their 5-2 defeat by our
team last Monday evening the Am
sterdam F.C. party thoroughly enjoy
ed their fleeting visit to London and
it was a happy group which boarded
the plane on Tuesday evening to re
turn home.
One member, their coach, had alte
red a little.
On Tuesday morning he innocently
accepted the offer of a shave by one
of his colleagues. An interested
audience of players gathered in the
bathroom to watch and gave whis
pered approval as each deft razor
stroke was made. In due course their
coach looked in the mirror and to his
disgust saw that his neatly trimmed
moustache had vanished. Yes, even
coaches live and learn.
Daily Express
Uit het bovenstaande blijkt, dat het
optreden van onze jonge goalie Joop
den Dekker grote indruk gemaakt
heeft. Ook kennelijk op de verslagge
ver van een der grootste Engelse bla
den, de „Daily Express", die het vol-
gende schreef:
HATS OFF TO JOOP
Q.P.R. 5 Amsterdam F.C. 2
Amsterdam ended this flood
lit game a tired team. And in
the second half only two players
stayed the course. No 1 was 17-year-
old goalkeeper Joop Dekker.
He made many brilliant saves and
in the home, dressing-room after the
match he was promptly dubbed ,,The
Flying Dutchman".
Amsterdam hero No. 2 was 6 ft.
3in. centre half Luuk Bijker. He was
never flustered, and his play gave the
Dutch defence a touch of class.
Brian Stars.
Star for Queen's Park Rangers
was right-half Brian Nicholas. For
the first 25 minutes Amsterdam were
more dangerous and led with a goal
by inside-left Wim Feldman.
Then Brian, who had been show
ing the forwards how to shoot,
found an opening through a crowd
of players in the Amsterdam goal to
equalise with a low drive from 15
yards.
Then Rangers took over. More
goals came through Willie Clarke
(2), Peter Angell, and Bobby Came
ron.
Feldman scored Amsterdam's
second goal from a penalty.

En nu laten wij de supporters aan
het woord, de Engelse supporters
dan. De ene brief was geadresseerd
als volgt:
To the Manager
Amsterdam Football Club
Holland.
Tante Pos weet gelukkig wel raad
in zo'n geval! En nu Lou Woudstra
in Engeland beschreven werd als
„President" van de Amsterdam Foot
ball Club, kan Wim van Teunenbroek
het moeilijk minder doen dan
„manager".
De 26-jarige W. A. Doughty, 34.
Hazlitt Road, West Kensington, Lon
don W. 14 schrijft als volgt:
„I feel I must write to you about
your team. I have just arrived home
from Queens Park Rangers Football
Ground where your team was playing
and must thank you for seeing such
a sportsmans like team of chaps
and so much clean and entertaining
football from them, but I must con
gratulate one in particular and that
is your young goalkeeper, mr. J. W.
den Dekker; he played a wonderful
game.
I would like you to thank every
one of them for a very nice match."
John Brackham. 92 Stowe Road,
Shepherds Bush, London W. 12 is ook
al enthousiast:
„After seeing your team play
Queens Park Rangers F.C. in a flood
lit footballmatch last evening, I felt
that I must congratulate your
"eleven" on their fine sporting dis
play. This match did much to en
hance the reputation for clean sport-
manship which the teams from the
Netherlands enjoy. Many thanks to
your team- for a grand performance
and an honest endeavour to play
good football at all times.
I deeply regret that I am unable
to write to you „in your own lan
guage".
Dat schrijven dan Engelse voetbal
fans, die nooit anders dan prof-voet-
bal zien.
Dat schrijven die brave vrienden dan
over een elftal, dat ons in de quali-
tatief zwakste afdeling, waarin we
sinds de oorlog werden ingedeeld, de
hele winter doet beven voor de derde
klasse. Zou je die jongens van het
eerste elftal nou eigenlijk niet met
een eind hout...?
