Open letter to Don Bradman

ALS ik het wel heb, waagde ik mij er nooit' aan in
onze Schakel over cricket te schrijven. Niet omdat ik
mij niet voor de verrichtingen der A.C.C. interes-
seerde integendeel, haar succes was mij een eer
en haar nederlaag een pijnlijk geval voor onze A.F.C
maar ik wist nu eenmaal te weinig van het spel, om mij'een
oordeel te durven aanmatigen.
Maar nu vond ik in de Daily Express van 26 Mei een
open brief aan de wereldberoemde Don Bradman, cricket-
fenomeen bij de Gratie Gods, en de inhoud frappeerde mij
dermate, dat ik hem onze A.C.C.-ers niet wil onthouden.
Blijkbaar dreigen óók bij de beoefening van „the King of
Sports misbruiken in te sluipen, welke weliswaar binnen de
rege.en blijven, doch allerminst sportief zijn. Maar hier is de
oner:
My dear Don. This letter is in no sense an attempt
to start anything that will cloud the pleasant atmosphere of
the Australian good-will tour.
But I cannot let pass unchallenged a practice that

Exactly the same argument was advanced, you will recall,
by defenders of an archaic practice known as body-line
bowling. But no more of that.
May I quote this comment by the Cricket Correspondent
or the Times: To their pace bowlers. Barnes is placedor
chooses to standat forward short leg, with one foot on the
prepared pitch and, consequently, so far in direct line with
the vision of the batsman that some spectators may have
been allowed to question whether this transgresses the ethics
of the game."
And this from the equally unsensational Manchester
Guardian: Donelly was visibly troubled by Barnes's
nearness at short leg."
Martin Donnelly, you will agree, is not the player to be
easily upset or temperamental.
Before the umpires are called upon to make a ruling under
the heading of what constitutes fair or unfair play, I suggest
that you remove the necessity for such a decision.

Merkt U wel hoe in de eerste plaats de smetteloze
„fairness van deze spelers met trots wordt genoemd? Inder
daad, deze voetballers en vergeten we niet dat ze sport
als hun beroep beoefenen zijn er kennelijk van door
drongen geweest dat zij de taak hadden de wereld te be
wijzen, dat Old-England op sportgebied nog superieur kan
zijn. Zij toonden zich de „English Masters"! Daartegenover
doet het gemanipuleer met de wedstrijdbal van Italië's voet-
bal-dictator Pozzo still going strong die in de wed-
gaan wij natuurlijk naar
