G. J. EILERS Co. I TRAINERS-REVIEW. We have now had three weeks of summer training and things in general have gone along more smoothly than hitherto; on Thursday June 23rd we had a demonstration of how the Dutch International XI carry out their train ing and we hope that all our players will con tinue to attend each training-evening so that we may carry on the good work with the hope of experiencing a succesfull season. My intention is to carry on as we have been doing and gradually introduce more ball exer cises. The mere fact that a trainer has been engaged does not mean that success is gua ranteed; just as much responsibility rests with the players themselves, not only in their keen ness when training but their regularity of training. We need eleven fit players and there is only one way of attaining this desire and that is by regular training at least once per week, once in every three or four weeks is not sufficient and might as well be entirely neglected. Before we commence our friendly games with other clubs, let me repeat what I have mentioned on more than one previous oc casion. Every player must think of the team first and let it be quite clear, that there is nothing that more surely leads to success than accurate combination. We have no time these days of individualism; we must have combined play and every player, when on the field (even though he is not in possession of the ball, must be thinking out his own play and deciding what he is going to do with the ball before he gets it; every successful player will readily acknowledge that it is absolutely necessary to be thinking, thinking, thinking for ninety minutes, even when the play is on the side of the field, every player must be thinking out his next move and under all circumstances try to anticipate the movements of opponents. Football is a game of tactics, one side putting its skill and wits against the other. The more all players think of their game, the easier they will find the game to play. The playert, scoring the goals, is not necessarily the hero, the player, providing the opportunity to make the goal is equally worthy of praise. Whenever a player calls for the ball, the man in possession should always try to give it to him as quickly as possible. This leads us to another very important point; no player should ask for the ball unless he first makes certain that he is in a good position to receive the ball, he should make this position bij run ning free from the opposition, but not offside, the free he makes his position, the more room will he have to bring the ball under control before being tackled. Running into an offside position and calling for the ball is a mistake that should not often happen, it merely provides your opponents with a free kick. Here let me issue a warning word to our extreme wing forwards, outside right and outside left, whenever they are wait ing for a ball to be kicked across to them, they should not stand level with the opposing full back, or even one metre outside. By doing this they are expecting too much from the referee. As the ball is kicked in front of them, the wingers will naturally at once run ahead to catch the ball, and will invariably look off side to the referee, altho technically, it is not offside. In nine cases out of ten the referee will blow for offside and we cannot blame him. because he hasn't seen the wing forward start for the ball from a just outside position, he usually sees the wing forward when the latter has taken several strikes and looks to be offside. Now these offside decision against us can be greatly reduced by making sure that we are outside by being say four, five, or even DRAAISTROOMMOTOREN E. M.
